You know, the response of some of our politicians when they're confronted over the terrible state and lack of decent cycle lanes in Ireland always bugs me. They, of course, come back with some silly arguement like "well we laid down 120km of cycle track last year". Painting a white line on a foot path, next to bus stop, with lamp posts in the middle of it, crosses a main road and then disappears when you need it most, is not my idea of a cycle lane. Cycle lanes need to completely separate from pedestrians and motorists otherwise they are rendered completely useless by pedestrians walking in them or cars driving in them.
